TRADING CARD FOR YOUR CHARACTER!!

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN TRADING CARD

On Thursday morning, we had to start thinking of our main character to create a story. In my opinion, it is a good way of creating a trading card, because you go step by step, thinking of qualities, likes and dislikes, adjectives to describe your character. These are the different steps:
                            Source
  • I saw Cavy for the first time in London in a friend’s house.
                         Appearance
  • She is broader than a rat, smaller than a rabbit and she has a chubby face with long whiskers.
                         Personality
  • She is always sociable, funny and nearly always happy.
                             Thoughts
  • Her most important thoughts are traveling, creating music and art, and finding food.
                             Feelings
  •  Her most important feelings are happiness, well-being and excitement
                              Problems
  • Cavy’s challenge is to visit the seven South American countries (Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Venezuela) and travel along the highlands of the Andes.
 Goal
  • Cavy wants to walk along the Andes, see the seven South American countries and to meet new friends during her journey.
Outcome
  • Cavy succeeds in her goals. As a result, she ends up meeting new friends.
Quote
  • “If you don’t start somewhere you’ll never get anywhere.”
Action
  • Cavy jumped out of the cage and run to throw me her favourite colourful ball. I then had to throw the ball away. It was getting dark and before heading back home Cavy hid my house keys in her cage.
                           Interactions
  • She got along with most of the characters in the story but on the other hand she found trouble with some people.
Personal Connection
  • Cavy is a globetrotter and she is an interesting and happy rodent because she knows how to manage herself in the big wide world. Cavy reminds me of myself because I’m a globetrotter like Cavy too! I consider myself a happy and independent person and I know how to take care of myself anywhere I go.

  1. I think using Trading Cards like this is a great resource.
At the beginning I liked the idea but I did not understand exactly the purpose and use of it. However, after doing my own trading card and see some examples as this one made by Marina, I have realized the great role that it can have in activities that has to do with stories.

On of these activities that can be done in a real class can be the creation of a story, and this cards gives the starting point to do it. The characters are one of the most important elements in a story. In this line, if the characters have been thought deeply and all their characteristics has been defined, it would make the creation of the story easier and the story would have sense and would be richer in the interaction between characters.

For these reasons, the creation of these kind of cards is a great resource that can lead into a great story made by students.

PD: I really like Cavy, she is just like you!

  2. Thanks for your post Cris! You were the first in writing me a comment...I feel so lonely sniff, sniff! But your comment cheered me up! As I told you in your trading card post it is an excellent idea to work with trading cards. Students need an environment of motivation rather than using books all the time and learning by heart things that probably they will never going to use for their futures. With this activity, they are creating, using their imagination...it is a better way of remembering things because they are the protagonists and they will use it in their daily life routines with anything.

  3. I had a great time reading about your kinda strange rat-rabbit-mouse thing hahahaha.
I really enjoyed this activity because it is really original compared with what we´ve been doing in our whole life.
What is important for a teacher is to be creative, to be fast using the part of the brain we use to think, to innovate, or just to make the students to feel confortable with every kind of topic you are teaching to them and I have to say, out of this post comment, you have all those qualitys. Would be nice to see you through a little hole in about five years and observ how you are doing with your students.
Keep it up my dear saxwoman !!!!
